If you are considering sprucing up the exterior of your home this spring, one of the easiest and least expensive ways to do so is add shutters to your windows. There are generally two types of shutters available for this type of exterior window treatment: Wood, full-function shutters with hinges and latches, and decorative vinyl shutters which are permanently affixed on either side of your window. Fully operable vinyl shutters are also available.
If you are considering wood as a better choice for their exterior windows, some thoughtful discussion on the advantages of vinyl shutters may be in order. Wood does look nicer when they are sealed and stained. But very few people stain shutters. They are usually primed and coated using two coats of exterior paint. Add to that the harshness of winter weather and the extreme temperature variations the shutters must withstand throughout the year, and maintenance becomes a major issue.
Exterior vinyl shutters, on the other hand, are lightweight and are offered in a wide variety of solid colors or shades that are meant to conform to the exterior color of the home. Made partially from polymers, vinyl shutters can easily mimic the look and feel of natural wood, but they are much lighter and the life expectancy of vinyl far exceeds that of wood, especially outdoors.
Homeowners with wooden exterior shutters know that wood requires maintenance every four to five years, often sooner. Old paint must be scraped off and the shutters sanded to near bare wood. It must then be primed, and repainted. On the other hand, vinyl exterior shutters are very lightweight and are resistant to moisture, which makes them ideal for outdoor use and the ideal material for exterior window treatments. The vast majority of newer homes already have vinyl siding.
Vinyl is much less expensive, and durable enough to withstand harsh winter and summer temperatures. They are easy to clean and will not crack twist or become warped from the weather. Some folks are sold on wood because it does look crisper than vinyl, especially on more expensive and elegant homes.
Careful thought should also be given to make sure that any exterior window treatments should compliment the overall look and feel of your home, including interior window treatments and design.
Exterior vinyl shutters have the same look as wood and during the manufacturing phase the molds used can create a grain look on the vinyl – making the shutters look like real wood. Installing shutters can be quite simple, often no more than affixing panels to the house or attaching doors to the main frame. For better home security, you can also install fully operable shutters, which can be closed over windows for protection against storms.

Windows are a necessary feature of many rooms in your home, and lend themselves to decoration and enhancement like many other areas of interior design. The size and shape, and position and type, of
Keeping gutters clean is a problem that may homeowners deal with. One solution to this problem is to use plastic gutter guards. They come in 5-foot lengths, and are corrugated so water runs through them. The guards form an umbrella over the top of the gutters, and you can run them in sections to fit the entire perimeter of your roof. The umbrella system allows the leaves and debris to fall off while water and smaller natural particles drain through to the gutters. This makes your gutters easier to clean, because rather than diging your hands into the gutters themselves, you can just scrape the leaves right off the top. Give us a call or click here to
